Analysis of meaning
The title of the painting, As above, So Below relates to a key principle of Hermeticism, that expresses the idea of harmony between different levels of reality. It suggests that the patterns and phenomena observed in the physical world (the microcosm) correspond to the patterns and phenomena in the spiritual or cosmic realms (the macrocosm), and vice versa which also relate to quantum and classical physics. This concept implies a unity of all things and is intended to convey the idea of interconnectedness and the unity of the cosmos.
This painting, extended with three-dimensional elements that represent steps, manifests a vortex which indicates a convergence of energies or elements and the unification of different aspects of the self or the culmination of various experiences. The vortex may also, in contrast, represent chaos, movement, and the unpredictable nature of transformation. Steps symbolise ascension and transcendence. However, the placement of the steps may indicate a treacherous and difficult path.
The vortex may be viewed as the final stage of individuation, where one fully integrates and confronts their deepest fears and unconscious elements, associated with enlightenment, spiritual awakening, or a higher state of consciousness. The juxtaposition of a labyrinth previously exhibitied in an installation with this painting suggest a merging of opposites which correlates with the artist's exploration of alchemy and its transformative processes.
This work incorporates a recursive process with a copy of the previous work Genesis I: Evolution 2024 placed at its centre. This process is extended and meanings further explored and developed in the film Emergence, 2024
